Title 10, U.S.C. section 2913b(c) directs the Secretary of Defense to provide for the establishment of the Science and Technology Academies Reinforcing Basic Aviation and Space Exploration (STARBASE) program. Department of Defense (DoD) STARBASE is a premier educational program, sponsored by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs. At DoD STARBASE, students participate in challenging "hands-on, mind-on" activities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).
DoD STARBASE focuses on elementary students, primarily fifth graders. The goal of the STARBASE Academies is to motivate youth to explore STEM as they continue their education. The program increases the interest and improves the knowledge and skills of students that are historically under-represented in the areas of mathematics, science, engineering and technology by exposing them to a STEM environment with positive role models while they interact with military personnel to explore careers and observe STEM applications in the "real world". The program provides students with 20-25 hours of stimulating experiences at National Guard, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force Reserve, Army and Air Force bases across the nation.
